چکیده

We are making a comprehensive study of the ablation of elemental materials by femtosecond lasers. Specifically, we are examining the ablation of a wide range of metals, under vacuum and in ambient air, using 850-nm wavelength, 100fs laser pulses in an intensity range approaching and extending beyond the air ionization threshold. We compare ablation rates and examine in detail the morphology and structural integrity of the ablation region, towards gaining greater knowledge of the interaction science as well as constructing empirical models for fabrication guidelines across the periodic table.

Surface charging and impulsive ion ejection during ultrashort pulsed laser ablation.

We report time-resolved studies using femtosecond laser pulses, accompanied by model calculations, that illuminate the difference in the dynamics of ultrashort pulsed laser ablation of different materials. Dielectrics are strongly charged at the surface on the femtosecond time scale and undergo an impulsive Coulomb explosion. This is not seen from metals and semiconductors where the surface cha...

Femtosecond Laser Ablation: Fundamentals and Applications

Traditionally nanosecond laser pulses have been used for Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) for quantitative and qualitative analysis of the samples. Laser produced plasmas using nanosecond laser pulses have been studied extensively since 1960s. With the advent of short and ultrashort laser pulses, there has been a growing interest in the applications of femtosecond and picosecond lase...

Influence of effective number of pulses on the morphological structure of teeth and bovine femur after femtosecond laser ablation.

Femtosecond lasers have been widely used in laser surgery as an instrument for contact-free tissue removal of hard dental, restorative materials, and osseous tissues, complementing conventional drilling or cutting tools. In order to obtain a laser system that provides an ablation efficiency comparable to mechanical instruments, the laser pulse rate must be maximal without causing thermal damage...

Femtosecond laser machining for characterization of local mechanical properties of biomaterials: a case study on wood

The standard preparation technique for micro-sized samples is focused ion beam milling, most frequently using Ga+ ions. The main drawbacks are the required processing time and the possibility and risks of ion implantation. In contrast, ultrashort pulsed laser ablation can process any type of material with ideally negligible damage to the surrounding volume and provides 4 to 6 orders of magnitud...

Femtosecond micro- and nano-machining of materials for microfluidic applications

Ultrafast laser micromachining is a promising candidate for microand nano-fabrication technology. Due to the high precision of femtosecond ablation, laser-machined features can be added to devices prototyped by lithography. To accomplish that, parametric studies of laser interrogation of materials of interest are necessary. We present femtosecond laser ablation studies of glass, PDMS, fused sil...
